Multiplication is a shortcut for repeated addition. Instead of writing 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 20, we write 5 × 4 = 20. In this lesson, you will learn the multiplication tables from 1 to 12 — one of the most important skills in all of mathematics!

1. What is Multiplication?

Multiplication means adding the same number multiple times:

  • 3 × 4 means "3 added 4 times" → 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12
  • 5 × 6 means "5 added 6 times" → 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 30

The symbol is × (times). The answer is called the product.


Commutative Property: The order does not matter! 3 × 4 = 4 × 3 = 12. This means you only need to learn HALF the tables — the rest are just reversed!


2. The Easy Tables: 2, 5, and 10


2 times table (just double the number):

2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24


5 times table (always ends in 0 or 5):

5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60


10 times table (just add a zero):

10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 110, 120


3. Strategies for Other Tables


4 times table = double the 2 times table:

4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40, 44, 48


9 times table (finger trick + digit sum = 9):

9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, 81, 90, 99, 108

Notice: 1+8=9, 2+7=9, 3+6=9, 4+5=9... the digits always add to 9!


11 times table (repeat the digit up to 9):

11, 22, 33, 44, 55, 66, 77, 88, 99, 110, 121, 132


3 times table:

3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33, 36

6 times table = double the 3 times table:

6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, 54, 60, 66, 72


7 times table (practise daily!):

7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, 56, 63, 70, 77, 84


8 times table = double the 4 times table:

8, 16, 24, 32, 40, 48, 56, 64, 72, 80, 88, 96


12 times table = 10 times + 2 times:

12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72, 84, 96, 108, 120, 132, 144


4. Word Problems

Problem 1: There are 7 rows of chairs. Each row has 8 chairs. How many chairs in total?

Solution: 7 × 8 = 56 chairs


Problem 2: A box contains 12 pencils. How many pencils are in 5 boxes?

Solution: 12 × 5 = 60 pencils


Problem 3: Banda saves 50 kwacha every day. How much does he save in 7 days?

Solution: 50 × 7 = 350 kwacha


5. Tips for Memorising Tables

  • Practise 5 minutes every day — consistency beats cramming
  • Use patterns: 5s end in 0/5, 9s digits sum to 9, 11s repeat digits
  • Say them aloud: "Three times four is twelve, four times three is twelve"
  • Write them out: Writing by hand builds memory faster than reading
  • Test yourself: Cover the answers and try to recall them
